Founded in 1973, the University of Minho began its courses in 1975/1976. The University Rectorate and Central Administration are located in Braga, in the Largo do Paço, an 18th century palace that used to be the archbishops' official residence.
Most teaching and research take place at either Gualtar Campus in Braga, or Azurém Campus, in Guimarães. This nearby historical town of Guimarães, where Portugal had its origin, is the hub of one of the most industrialised areas of Portugal. Many hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME'S) operate in this area, especially in the agro-food, textiles, clothing, footwear, light metalworking and furniture sectors. The electronics and software industries are also an important asset for the region. Most Engineering courses as well Architecture, Fashion Design and Marketing, Geography and Planning are taught in Guimarães (Azurém Campus). In contrast, Science, Health Sciences, Economics and Management, Education, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences courses are predominantly based in Braga (Gualtar Campus). The Gualtar Campus is The University of Minho's largest campus. The Schools of Sciences, Health Sciences, Law, Psychology, and Nursing can be found there, as well as the Institutes of Human and Social Sciences, Education, Arts and Human Sciences, and part of the School of Engineering.
This campus also includes a set of services such as a general library, several specialised libraries, a canteen, a university restaurant, a grill, seven bars, a medical station, a sports complex and two copy centres.
